There’s always that one person who stresses out about the most ridiculously minuscule problems and will always find a way to be stressed even when there is nothing to actually be stressed about. I’m one of those people. Lately I’ve been exploring the world of meditation, not just as a way of finding calm but also as a way of trying something new.

I’ve quickly realised that a lot more people meditate than I’d expected, particularly here at Bilue. We’ve recently opened up a discussion around the different ways we each meditate, the tools we use to assist our meditation and some tips to achieve more calm in our day to day life.

Film Director George Lucas has actually taken instruction on Transcendental Meditation and it is widely believed that Sidha Master Yogi (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi) served as the model for Jedi Master Yoda within his films.

Centered Meditation

When I first started exploring meditation it was recommended that I attend a guided meditation session at the Centred Meditation studio in Sydney’s CBD. Close by to the Bilue office, our Office Manager Joanna and I decided to sneak out for a lunch time session. Much to my initial surprise the studio was amazingly calm, modern and comfortable. We met Kevin and Kieran who welcomed us to the space and explained to us how things worked. For our not-too-short, not-too-long 30 minute session we turned off our phones, removed all distractions and focused on awareness. Headspace

A lot of people at Bilue quickly put me onto Headspace, a Web, iOS and Android application that simplifies meditation down into bite sized chunks. Presented as a “gym membership for the mind”, it lets you spend 10 minutes each day following a guided meditation session by Andy Puddicombe a renowned expert in meditation. He has also presented an amazing TEDX talk on being mindful and refreshing the mind for 10 minutes each day. Andy explores the reasons behind why people meditate and how it can help you in your day to day life.

Transcendental Meditation

I spoke to Eric earlier who, rather than guided meditation, does the Transcendental Meditation technique. Having attended a course with Tim Brown years ago, he really enjoyed the unique approach. He believes the 20 minute sessions really clear the mind, calm him down if stressed and if tired help him feel refreshed and alert. Instead of listening to anyone or being guided, it allows Eric to sit still and use his own personal mantra to meditate.

After doing meditation for a couple of years now, I can’t really think of any other way to truly de-stress, relax and focus.

Brown’s teachings state that there is no need to worry about ‘good’ or ‘bad’ meditation, just the act of attempting meditation is perfectly fine. This stress free, no obligation approach to meditation has stuck with Eric who fits it in wherever and whenever he can. Though regular meditation is the true key for an increased benefit.
